PROMPT® – “Prompts for Restructuring Oral-Muscular Phonetic Targets” is an evidence based therapy method that uses a tactile-kinesthetic based approach for re-organizing movement patterns resulting in accurate speech production. The technique uses touch (or tactile/kinesthetic) input on the muscles of the jaw, lips, face and tongue (mylohyoid muscles are located under the chin). Traditional speech and language therapy relies on the person imitating what he/she hears with what the therapist is doing. PROMPT helps the person achieve an auditory and motor map based upon the tactile input provided by the therapist.
PROMPT therapy is unique in that it focuses on the whole individual. Evaluations systematically determine where motor breakdowns occur, whether they be physical/sensory, social/emotional, cognitive/linguistic domains. Therapy objectives are determined based on the weaknesses in each area.
